My Photography & Travel Guide to Rothenberg ob der Tauber, Germany
In December 2023, we set out on a Christmas Market tour through Zurich, Colmar, Freiberg, Baden-Baden, Heidelberg, Nuremberg, Düsseldorf, and Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Every city had its charm. But Rothenburg stole our hearts.
The moment you step inside its medieval walls, time slows down. Cobblestone streets. Timber-framed houses painted in soft pastels. Tiny cafés glowing with warm light. It feels less like a town and more like a storybook that somehow came to life.
Once a year, Rothenburg transforms into a true winter fairytale. The Christmas market, dating back to the 15th century, fills the main square with wooden stalls, evergreen garlands, and the scent of mulled wine drifting through the cold air. It is intimate, authentic, and wonderfully old-world.
Of all the markets we visited, this was the one we did not want to leave.

If you are looking for practical travel tips for Rothenburg and the best photography spots in Rothenburg, this guide will help you plan a trip that delivers strong images and a memorable experience.
When to Go to Rothenburg ob der Tauber?
Rothenburg is beautiful any time of year. Spring brings flowers along the medieval walls. Summer fills the squares with life. Fall adds warm tones to the half-timbered houses.
But if you want magic, go before Christmas.
From late November through December, the town hosts its famous Reiterlesmarkt, a tradition that dates back to the 15th century. The market lights up the main square with wooden stalls, evergreen garlands, candles, and the scent of roasted almonds and mulled wine drifting through the cold air.
Go in the late afternoon. Arrive before sunset. Walk the streets while there is still soft light, then stay as blue hour settles in, and the lights begin to glow. That is when Rothenburg feels like a real-life fairytale.
Dress warmly. Slow down. And give yourself time to wander without a plan. That is when this town reveals its charm.
The Christmas market is one of Germany's most beautiful Christmas Markets. As you walk through the streets, you will smell mulled wine, “Gluewein,” roasted chestnuts, and all sorts of delicious treats.
Where to Stay?
We stayed at Hotel Herrnschlösschen, and it was the perfect base for exploring the town.
The location alone is hard to beat. It sits just steps from the Town Hall, right in the historic center. You walk out the door and you are immediately surrounded by cobblestone streets and medieval charm.
What truly amazed me is the history. Parts of the building date back more than 1,000 years. Think about that. Generations have passed through those walls long before any of us ever picked up a camera.
The hotel has only eight rooms, which makes it feel intimate and personal. It never felt crowded. The service was warm and thoughtful, the kind you remember long after the trip is over.
And the restaurant. Quiet, refined, and excellent. After a cold evening at the Christmas market, sitting down to a beautiful meal just steps from your room felt like a reward.
If you want atmosphere, history, and a truly central location, this is where I would stay again without hesitation.
Where to Eat?
One of the unexpected highlights of our stay was how well we ate.
The restaurant at Hotel Herrnschlösschen was fantastic. It feels intimate and refined without being pretentious. After a cold evening walking through the Christmas market, sitting down to a beautifully prepared meal just steps from our room felt like the perfect ending to the day. Warm lighting. Thoughtful service. Seasonal dishes that felt both elegant and comforting.
For something more casual and equally memorable, we loved Bäckerei-Konditorei-Café Walter Friedel e.K. This is the kind of local bakery you hope to find in a medieval town. Fresh bread, delicate pastries, and strong German coffee. It was ideal for a relaxed breakfast before heading out with the camera.
My advice. Mix it up. Enjoy a cozy sit-down dinner one night, then grab a simple pastry and coffee the next morning before wandering the cobblestone streets. In Rothenburg, even the smallest meal feels like part of the experience.
Photography Locations
One of the things I love about Rothenburg is its compactness. You can walk from one side of town to the other in 10 to 15 minutes. That means no rushing, no taxis, no complicated logistics. Just wander with your camera and look up.
The Doors of the City
For some reason, I just loved the doors of the homes in the village. They come in every shape and color you could imagine.
The Christmas Market
You definitely want to take photos of the Christmas Market. There is a very popular store in Germany called Kathe Wohlfahrt which originates from this town.
Walking Through the Town
I loved walking through the streets of the town. There are just so many charming spots to photograph. I loved the colors of the homes and their shapes.
Plönlein
This is the most photographed spot in the town. You will find many people who come only to photograph this spot. You can get a photograph early in the morning or late in the evening without all the tourists.

The Ramparts
Finally, the Ramparts of the city are stunning and so well preserved. You can walk through the ancient doorways and along the ramparts.
Final Thoughts
There are places you enjoy, and then there are places that stay with you. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of those rare towns that feels untouched by time. It invites you to slow down, to wander without a plan, to look closely at the details most people rush past. Whether you come for the Christmas market, the medieval walls, or simply the feeling of stepping into a storybook, you will leave with more than photos. You will leave with a sense of wonder. And if you are anything like me, you will already be thinking about when you can return.
